Qur’aanic Proof that All of the Prophets Were Muslim (And More…)

Proof That the Only Religion Acceptable to Allaah is One (And it is Islaam)

“Truly the religion with Allaah is Islaam.” – Aali ‘Imraan (3):19

“And whoever seeks a religion other than Islaam, it will never be accepted of him, and in the Hereafter he will be one of the losers.” – Aali ‘Imraan (3):85

Proof That the Religion of All of the Prophets is One (And it is Islaam)

General Proof

He (Allaah) has ordained for you the same religion which He ordained for Nooh (Noah), and that which We have inspired in you (O Muhammad), and that which We ordained for Ibraaheem (Abraham), Moosaa (Moses‎) and ‘Eesaa (Jesus), saying you should establish the religion and make no divisions in it. – Ash-Shooraa (42):13

And strive hard in Allaah’s Cause as you ought to strive. He has chosen you and has not laid upon you in the religion any hardship. It is the religion of your father Ibraaheem (Abraham). It is He (Allaah) Who has named you Muslims both before and in this (the Qur’aan), that the Messenger (Muhammad) may be a witness over you and you be witnesses over mankind! – Al-Hajj (22):78

Say (O Muslims), “We believe in Allaah and that which has been sent down to us and that which has been sent down to Ibraaheem (Abraham), Ismaa’eel (Ishmael), Ishaaq (Isaac), Ya’qoob (Jacob), and to Al-Asbaat [the twelve sons of Ya’qoob (Jacob)], and that which has been given to Moosaa (Moses) and ‘Eesaa (Jesus), and that which has been given to the Prophets from their Lord. We make no distinction between any of them (with regards belief – i.e. believing in some and disbelieving in others), and to Him we have submitted (as Muslims).” – Al-Baqarah (2):136

Or were you witnesses when death approached Ya’qoob (Jacob)? When he said unto his sons, “What will you worship after me?” They said, “We shall worship your God (Allaah), the God of your fathers, Ibraaheem (Abraham), Ismaa’eel (Ishmael), Ishaaq (Isaac), One God, and to Him we submit (as Muslims).” – Al-Baqarah (2):133

“And I have followed the religion of my fathers, – Ibraaheem (Abraham), Ishaaq (Isaac) and Ya’qoob (Jacob), and never could we attribute any partners whatsoever to Allaah. This is from the Grace of Allaah to us and to mankind, but most men thank not (i.e. they neither believe in Allaah, nor worship Him).” – Yoosuf (12):38

Those to whom We gave the Scripture [i.e. the Tauraat (Torah) and the Injeel (Gospel), etc.] before it, – they believe in it (the Qur’aan). * And when it is recited to them, they say: “We believe in it. Verily, it is the truth from our Lord. Indeed even before it we have been from those who submit themselves to Allaah in Islaam as Muslims. – Al-Qasas (28):52-53

Nooh (Noah) – Upon Him Be Peace – Was Muslim:

And recite to them the news of Nooh (Noah). When he said to his people: “O my people, if my stay (with you), and my reminding (you) of the Aayaat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.) of Allaah is hard on you, then I put my trust in Allaah. So devise your plot, you and your partners, and let not your plot be in doubt for you. Then pass your sentence on me and give me no respite. * But if you turn away, then no reward have I asked of you, my reward is only from Allaah, and I have been commanded to be one of the Muslims.” – Yoonus (10):71-72

Ibraaheem (Abraham) – Upon Him Be Peace – Was Muslim:

﴿مَا كَانَ إِبْرَاهِيمُ يَهُودِيًّا وَلاَ نَصْرَانِيًّا وَلَكِن كَانَ حَنِيفًا مُّسْلِمًا وَمَا كَانَ مِنَ الْمُشْرِكِينَ﴾ آل عمران:67
Ibraaheem (Abraham) was neither a Jew nor a Christian, but he was a true Muslim Haneefan (Islaamic Monotheism – to worship none but Allaah Alone) and he was not of Al-Mushrikoon (i.e. those who associate partners in worship with Allaah). – Aali ‘Imraan (3):67

And this was enjoined by Ibraaheem (Abraham) upon his sons and by Ya’qoob (Jacob), (saying), “O my sons! Allaah has chosen for you the (true) religion, then die not except in the Faith of Islaam (as Muslims).” – Al-Baqarah (2):132

‘Eesaa (Jesus) – Upon Him Be Peace – Was Muslim:

﴿فَلَمَّا أَحَسَّ عِيسَى مِنْهُمُ الْكُفْرَ قَالَ مَنْ أَنصَارِي إِلَى اللّهِ قَالَ الْحَوَارِيُّونَ نَحْنُ أَنصَارُ اللّهِ آمَنَّا بِاللّهِ وَاشْهَدْ بِأَنَّا مُسْلِمُونَ﴾ آل عمران:52
Then when ‘Eesaa (Jesus) came to know of their disbelief, he said: “Who will be my helpers in Allaah’s Cause?” Al-Hawaariyyoon (the disciples) said: “We are the helpers of Allaah; we believe in Allaah, and bear witness that we are Muslims.” – Aali ‘Imraan (3):52

And when I (Allaah) put in the hearts of Al-Hawaariyyeen (the disciples) [of ‘Eesaa (Jesus)] to believe in Me and My Messenger, they said: “We believe. And bear witness that we are Muslims.” – Al-Maa’idah (5):111

Moosaa (Moses) – Upon Him Be Peace – Was Muslim:

﴿وَقَالَ مُوسَى يَا قَوْمِ إِن كُنتُمْ آمَنتُم بِاللّهِ فَعَلَيْهِ تَوَكَّلُواْ إِن كُنتُم مُّسْلِمِينَ﴾ يونس:84
And Moosaa (Moses) said: “O my people! If you have believed in Allaah, then put your trust in Him if you are Muslims.” – Yoonus (10):84

They said: “We believe in the Lord of the ‘Aalameen (mankind, jinns and all that exists). * The Lord of Moosaa (Moses) and Haaroon (Aaron).” * Fir’aun (Pharaoh) said: “You have believed in him [Moosaa (Moses)] before I give you permission. Surely, this is a plot which you have plotted in the city to drive out its people, but you shall come to know. * Surely, I will cut off your hands and your feet on opposite sides, then I will crucify you all.” * They said: “Verily, we are returning to our Lord. * And you take vengeance on us only because we believed in the Aayaat (proofs, evidences, lessons, signs, etc.) of our Lord when they reached us! Our Lord! pour out on us patience, and cause us to die as Muslims.” – Al-A’raaf (7):121-126

And We took the Children of Israel across the sea, and Fir’aun (Pharaoh) with his hosts followed them in oppression and enmity, till when drowning overtook him, he said: “I believe that none has the right to be worshipped but He in Whom the Children of Israel believe, and I am one of the Muslims.” – Yoonus (10):90

Yoosuf (Joseph) – Upon Him Be Peace – Was Muslim:

﴿رَبِّ قَدْ آتَيْتَنِي مِنَ الْمُلْكِ وَعَلَّمْتَنِي مِن تَأْوِيلِ الأَحَادِيثِ فَاطِرَ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالأَرْضِ أَنتَ وَلِيِّي فِي الدُّنُيَا وَالآخِرَةِ تَوَفَّنِي مُسْلِمًا وَأَلْحِقْنِي بِالصَّالِحِينَ﴾ يوسف:101
“My Lord! You have indeed bestowed on me of the sovereignty, and taught me the interpretation of dreams; The (only) Creator of the heavens and the earth! You are my Waliyy (Protector, Helper, Supporter, Guardian, etc.) in this world and in the Hereafter, cause me to die as a Muslim, and join me with the righteous.” – Yoosuf (12):101

Sulaymaan (Solomon) – upon him be peace – was Muslim:

﴿قَالَتْ يَا أَيُّهَا المَلَأُ إِنِّي أُلْقِيَ إِلَيَّ كِتَابٌ كَرِيمٌ ۝ إِنَّهُ مِن سُلَيْمَانَ وَإِنَّهُ بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ ۝ أَلَّا تَعْلُوا عَلَيَّ وَأْتُونِي مُسْلِمِينَ﴾ النمل:31
She said: “O chiefs! Verily! Here is delivered to me a noble letter, * Verily! It is from Sulaimaan (Solomon), and verily! It (reads): “In the Name of Allaah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful; * Be you not exalted against me, but come to me as Muslims.'” – An-Naml (27):29-31

Are you a new Muslim? Sheikh Uthaymeen Advises A Newly Practicing Muslim #islam #revert #convert #muslim #newmuslim #Aqeedah

Sheikh Muhammed bin Saleh al Uthaymeen (may Allah have mercy on him) was asked:

What is your advice for an individual who has just begun to practice Islam?

Answer:
My advice to this new practicing individual is:
1- He should constantly ask Allah to make him firm.
2- He should increase in recitation of The Quran with contemplation. This is because recitation has a major (positive) affect on the heart, especially when coupled with contemplation and reflection.
3- He should be diligent in being obedient to Allah, and he should not become bored or lazy. This is because The Messenger (salAllahu alayhi wa salem) sought refuge from inability and laziness.
4- He should be diligent in befriending good companions, and distance himself from evil companions.
5- He should also advise himself when he finds himself thinking: Time is extremely lengthy and the path is too long! At this point, he should advise himself and remain firm. This is because Jennah (paradise) is surrounded with trials and difficulties, while the The Hell-fire is surrounded with desires.
6- He should distance himself from bad companions even if they (those companions) are individuals he knew in the past. This is due to the fact that evil/bad companions influence an individual. Because of this The Messenger (salAllahu alayhi wa salem) said: The example of a bad companion is the example of a black smith; either he burns your clothing, or you experience from him a disgusting odor. (Bukhari: 5534, Muslim:2628)

Assalamu alaykum warhamatualli wa baarakatahu. This is an email Aboo Talhah Daawood Burbank (may Allaah have mercy upon him) sent to me when I asked him concerning references he was using for his Riyaadus-Saaliheen’ classes. He also sent me a Key to abbreviations and references used in the classes to make it easier when you make notes.

He had told me that Shaykh Rabeea’ (may Allaah protect him) had advised him to use this approach, in using explanations of Books of Hadeeth by various ‘ulema. If you look at the list, one will come to know how much effort he would put in preparing these lessons so that we become aquainted with the Sunnah of our beloved Messenger sallAallaahu ‘alayhi wassalam. May Allaah,Al Shakoor accept his efforts and give us the tawfeeq to act upon what we know, Allaahumma ameen.

The Messenger of Allaah (salAllaahu alayhi wassallam) said, “Whoever calls to guidance will have the reward similar to all those who follow him without their reward diminishing in any way and whoever calls to misguidance, he will have the sins similar to all those who follow him without their sins decreasing in any way.”(Muslim)

“Our final sitting with Shaikh Rabee” Premier Hajj 2011 @premierhajj #islam #sunnah #muhammed

Our final sitting with Shaikh Rabee’ – Premier Hajj 2011

Last night saw our final sitting in Makka with Shaikh Rabee’ ibnu Haadee Al Madkhali – Hafidhahullah before our departure to Madina.

Once again the sitting was a beautiful one! We had a private sitting with the Shaikh after Salaatul Ishaa. We met the Shaikh in his masjid then returned back to his home.

After drinking tea with him in the library of the Shaikh, and speaking about the affairs of the da’wah in The Uk and in Europe generally, the shaikh asked our brother Abu Hakeem concerning Muhammad in the present day Bible. We then proceeded upstairs to the private study of the shaikh, where the issue was discussed in more detail with a discussion of certain references.

The shaikh also asked about the books that are being taught in the Uk.

The Shaikh then proceeded to research an issue related to the science of Hadeeth that he was looking into before we came. He told our brother Abu Hakeem to read and translate to the brothers so he read to us from Al Ibaanatus Sughraa of Ibn Battah and the shaikh would break from his research to comment on the speech of Ibn Battah – Rahimahullah. Considering the fact that the shaikh is in his mid 80’s he was researching and reading without glasses and listening to the passage being read and commenting at the same time!

We then proceeded to an adjacent room where the shaikh had dinner served for the brothers to our surprise. The Shaikh himself had a humble meal of foul bean paste (resembling hommous) with olive oil, which he ate with bread, cheese, olives and water.

At the end of the night he bid the brothers farewell and conveyed his salaam to Ahlus sunnah in the UK.

The evening made us reflect upon the Imaams of the Salaf and how they used to be, we ask Allah to bless and preserve our Shaikh and bless the Ummah to continue to benefit from his advice, his writings his exhortations, his character and his stances.

Amazing Admonition From Yunus Bin Ubayd to Those Complaining About Poverty and Hardship!

Ghassaan bin al-Mufaddal al-Ghulaabee said:
حدثني بعض أصحابنا قال جاء رجل إلى يونس بن عبيد فشكا إليه ضيقا من حاله ومعاشه واغتماما بذلك فقال أيسرك ببصرك مئة ألف قال لا قال فبسمعك قال لا قال فبلسانك قال لا قال فبعقلك قال لا في خلال وذكره نعم الله عليه ثم قال يونس أرى لك مئين ألوفا وأنت تشكو الحاجة

Some of our associates narrated to me that a man came to Yunus bin Ubayd (d. 139H) and complained of the hardship he was going through in his livelihood and of his anxiety because of it. So he said (to him), “Would you be happy to give up your eyesight for a hundred thousand (dinars, dirhams)?” He said, “No.” He said, “Then what about your hearing?” He said, “No.” He said, “Then what about your tongue?” He said, “No.” He said, “Then what about your aql (intellect)?” He said, “No, [not] for any wants, needs.” Then he reminded him of the favours of Allaah upon him after which he, Yunus, said, “I see that you have hundreds of thousands of (dinars, dirhams) yet you are complaining of need!

Al-Siyar of al-Dhahabi (6/292). And the meaning here is that since you have placed such monetary worth on your faculties granted to you by Allaah, then you can’t be that destitute like what you are claiming, and in reality, Allaah’s favours and bounties upon your are abundant by your own self-admission.

In What Lies the Rectitude of the Child, the Youth, the Middle-Aged, the Woman and the One Who Harms Others?

Al-Hakeem al-Tirmidhi said:

The rectitude of five lie in five: The rectitude of a child lies in the study-room. The rectitude of a youth lies in (seeking and acquiring) knowledge. The rectitude of the mature, middle-aged man lies in the masjid. The rectitude of a woman is in her house. And the rectitude of one who harms others is in the prison.

Shaqiq Al-Balkhi on the Signs of True Repentance

Shaqiq al-Balkhi said:

The sign(s) of (true) repentance are: Crying over what has passed by (of one’s actions), fear of falling into the sin (once again), boycotting evil company, and accompanying the righteous.

Al-Siyar of al-Dhahabib (9/315)

Abu Al-Dardaa: Three Things I Love but Which the People Hate

Abu al-Dardaa (radiallaahu anhu) said:
ثلاثة أحبهن ويكرههن الناس الفقر والمرض والموت أحب الفقر تواضعا لربي والموت اشتياقا لربي والمرض تكفيرا لخطيئتي

Three things I love but the people hate: Poverty, illness and death. I love poverty out of humility to my Lord, and death out of fondness (of meeting) my Lord, and illness as expiation for my sin.

EVERY CENTURY WILL HAVE ITS REVIVER

*Imaam Aboo Daawood -rahimahullaah- said in his Sunan [`Awnul-Ma`bood:(11/385)]: Start of the Book of Battles Chapter: What is Mentioned about Each Century

ibn Daawood – Mahriyy, related to us: Ibn Wahb related to us: Sa`eed ibn Abee Ayyoob related to me: from Shuraaheel ibn Yazweed al-Ma`aafiriyy: from Aboo `Alqamah: from Aboo Hurairah – as best as I know from Allaah’s Messenger  who said, ’Awnul-Ma`bood (11/385- 396) of al-`Azeemabaadee.

“‘At the head of every hundred years …’” i.e., its end or its beginning – when knowledge and the sunnah becomes scarce and ignorance and innovation become widespread – said by al-Qaaree.” “He/those who will revive its religion for it …” “i.e., make the sunnah clear from innovation and increase knowledge and aid its people and curb and subdue the innovators.” “Al-Alqmaee said in his explanation that the meaning of tajdeed (revival) is revival of action upon the Book and the Sunnah and command in accordance with them – that had been effaced.”

“Note: Know that what is meant by the head of the hundred in this hadeeth is its completion. The author of Majma`ul-Bihaar said, “What is meant is one who is alive and a well-known scholar, and at-Teebee said, ‘What is meant by his being raised/sent is one who is alive and a scholar of note when the hundred is completed – this is what occurs in the introduction of Fathul-Qadeer of al-Munaawee and Khulaasatul- Aathaar of Muhyee. And as-Suyooytee said in his poem about the revivers , ‘And the condition for that is that the hundred should pass and he is alive amongst the people – known as being a person having standing in knowledge, and propagating the Sunnah with his speech.’

And the author of Mirqaatus-Su`ood quotes Ibn al-Atheer as saying, “And what is meant by the one mentioned is one who is alive, known, famous and pointed out when the hundred finishes. And the clear proof that what is meant by the head of the hundred is their end, not their beginning is that az-Zuhree, and Ahmad ibn Hanbal and others from the earlier and later Imaams are agreed that from the revivers at the head of the first hundred was `Umar ibn `Abdil-`Azeez – rahimahullaah, and at the end of the second hundred was Imaam ash-Shaafi`ee -rahimahullaah, and `Umar ibn `Abdil-`Azeez died in the year 101 at the age of forty – and his khilaafah lasted for two and a half years, and ash-Shaafi`ee died in the year 204 at the age of fifty-four. ”

Al-Haafiz Ibn Hajr said in Tawaaliyyut-Ta·sees, Aboo Bakr al-Bazzaar said, “I heard `Abdul-Malik ibn `Abdil-Hameed al-Maymoonee say, ‘I was with Ahmad ibn Hanbal, and ash-Shaafi`ee was mentioned. So I saw Ahmad extolling him, and he said, ‘It is related that the Prophet  said, “Allaah will provide one at the head of every hundred years one who will teach the people their Religion.”’ Ahmad said, ‘So for the first century there was ’Umar ibn `Abdil-`Azeez, and for the second century was ash-Shaafi’ee.’’”

And by way of Sa`eed al-Firyaabee who said, “Ahmad ibn Hanbal said, ‘Allaah will provide for the people in every hundred years one who will teach the people the matters of the Sunnah, and rebut lies against the Prophet . So we looked and saw that `Umar ibn `Abdil-`Azeez was at the head of the first hundred, and at the end of the second was ash-Shaafi’ee …
1
So if you say: what is apparent from the language with regard to the meaning of, ‘… the head of the century …’ (ra`sul-mi·ah) is its beginning, not its end – then how can its end be what is meant?
I say: Rather it occurs in the language also that it can mean the end. The author of Taajul-`Aroos, said, “The head of a thing is its extremity, and it is said, ‘Its end.’”I say: And upon this is the hadeeth of Ibn ’Umar, “Do you see this night of yours? Then at the head of a hundred years from it, no-one is alive upon the face of the earth will remain.” Reported by the two Shaikhs.”
And al-Haafiz said in Fathul-Baaree in explanation of the head of the century, “Meaning: at the end of the century.”

“The author of Majaalisul-Abraar said, ‘And what is meant by revival of that which has been effaced from action upon the Book and the Sunnah and command according to them,’ and he said in it, ‘And that reviver (mujaddid) will not be known except by preponderance of opinion of those scholars who live in his time – due to his condition and the benefit that is derived from his knowledge – since the reviver (mujaddid) must be one having knowledge of the branches of knowledge of the Religion, that which is apparent and that which is not apparent, aiding the Sunnah (naasirun lis-Sunnah), cutting off innovation, and that his knowledge is recognised by the people of his time …”

So it is clear that the mujaddid will not be except one who is a scholar of the branches of knowledge of the Religion and along with that strives and gives great attention day and night to reviving matters of the Sunnah and spreading it, and aiding its companion, and killing-off innovation and new matters and effacing them and routing its people with the tongue, or by writing books, or teaching, or so on – and one who is not like that can in no way be a mujaddid – even if he is a scholar of Religious sciences, famous amongst the people and referred to by them …”
“Further Note: And know that it is not essential that at the head of each century there should only be a single reviver, rather it is possible for there to be more than one. Al-Haafiz Ibn Hajr said in Tawaaliyut- Ta·sees, ‘Some scholars have taken this hadeeth to refer to more than a single person, and it is possible from the wording of the hadeeth which we have quoted … since the hadeeth indicates that the revival indicated is general for all the people of that time. And this was very possible with regard to `Umar ibn `Abdil-`Azeez and then ash-Shaafi’ee. But as for those who came after that, then they had others to share with them.”

He said in Fathul-Baaree, “And it (i.e., taking the hadeeth to refer to more than one person) is allowable, since those qualities requiring revival are not restricted to one type of good, and it is not essential that all of the qualities of good come together in a single person – unless that is claimed for `Umar ibn `Abdil- ’Azeez – since he was the one in charge of the affairs at the end of the first century, and he possessed all the qualities of good and had precedence in them. Therefore Ahmad said that they took the hadeeth to mean him. But as for those who came after him, then ash-Shaafi`ee even though he had excellent qualities, yet he was not in charge of Jihaad or of judging with justice – so upon this anyone having part of these qualities at the end of the century is referred to, whether a number of people or not.”

The Virtues of the beloved Companions (radiAllaahu anhum)
by Sheikh ‘AbdulMuhsin Al-‘Abbad
Translated by Abdulilah Lahmami

It has been established that the Messenger (salAllaahu alayhi wasallam) said, “Whoever calls to guidance will have the reward similar to all those who follow him without their reward diminishing in any way and whoever calls to misguidance, he will have the sins similar to all those who follow him without their sins decreasing in any way.”[1]

This noble hadeeth primarily necessitates a great portion and fortune for the Companions because they are the ones that took this guidance and light from the Messenger (salAllaahu alayhi wasallam) and passed it on to those after them. So all those that benefited from it, the Companions (radiAllahu anhum) will have reward similar to theirs until Allaah inherits the earth and those upon it.

Yet before them, the Messenger (salAllaahu alayhi wasallam), (since) he came with this good and this guidance, Allaah will reward His Prophet (salAllahu alayhi wasallam) with the same reward as He gives to all those who were guided, entered the religion of Allaah and did good deeds, without their reward decreasing in any way. This is because the Prophet (salAllaahu alayhi wasallam) is the one who called the people to this guidance. He has the same reward of all those who benefited from it due to him, may Allaah’s blessing be upon him.

The Companions of the Messenger of Allaah (salAllaahu alayhi wasallam) will have a great portion and fortune from that reward for they are the ones who obtained this guidance and passed it on to those after them. They are the ones who collected the Qur’an. They are the ones who memorised it. They are the ones who passed it on to those who came after them. Those who obtained the Sunnah of the Allaah’s Messenger (salAllaahu alayhi wasallam), May Allaah be pleased with them. They passed it on to those who came after them thereby gaining much reward and recompense. They will receive a great reward and a great fortune from the call of the Messenger (salAllaahu alayhi wasallam).

Disciplining your children, Advise by Abu Talha RahimaaAllah #islam #children #morals #muslim #sunnah #muhammed

November 14, 2011 Leave a comment

Some advice Aboo Talhah Daawood Burbank (may Allaah have mercy upon him) sent to me.

bismillaahir-Rahmaanir-Raheem,

As for the topic, then there are bits and pieces available, some of them translated I think (?)
I’m a bit tied up at the moment, and therefore not able to research and translate anything for a
topic like this.
As for not disciplining children at all, nor teaching them the Deen, before the age of seven, then I
think there has perhaps been a misunderstanding here, and that the issue is perhaps one of not
commanding them with obligations of the Deen before that age, and not disciplining them for
not carrying out obligations of the Religion at a young age, wallaahu a`lam.
As for not teaching them before the age of seven, then this is contrary to what is implemented in
the Muslim lands, where children often learn the whole Qur.aan before that age.
As for not disciplining them regarding anything before the age of seven, then that sounds like a
recipe for disaster. We can already see the evil effects in our Salafee community, in the wider
Muslim community, and in society at large, of not disciplining children from the start; and due to
ignorance, or more often pure laziness, leaving off disciplining children until the age of five.
The situation is so bad that many/most parents seem to think that it is quite normal/appropriate
for children (of whatever age) to run wild in other people’s houses, in public, and in the masjid.
They seem incapable of sitting quietly for more than a few seconds, and have to be
wandering/running around, using their vocal chords, and grabbing whatever they take a fancy to.
Myself and the wife have seen this behaviour countless times, and the worst thing is that the
parents don’t even see it to be a problem.
Then we hear parents complaints such as ‘I can’t control my four year old!’ i.e. the four year old
child decides for himself what he wants to do, or doesn’t want to do; and imposes that upon the
adult (?) parents. Well this is how they have brought him up: they have been too bone idle to
spend time bringing him/her up properly, so as a fitting punishment they can sit back and watch
him get worse and worse as the years go by.
Then you get some who say ‘I beat my child often, but it doesn’t seem to have any effect any
more’!!!
Why was it ever allowed to get to this stage?! Why, instead didn’t you teach him/her from the
earliest age that there are many things that he/she can do, and they can play and have fun; but
there are also things that they cannot do. Teach them the word ‘No!’ at an early age, and make
sure that they learn that ‘No’ means that they can NOT do it/have it: it doesn’t mean that they have
to start whingeing to get what they want; and that eventually the mother will always get fed-up,
and relent, and give them what they want. Let them learn that whingeing, and certainly tantrums
are a waste of time, and will not produce any positive results for them.
People seem to think that disciplining small children in this manner is cruel; but they don’t seem
to think that letting the kids run wild, which leads to them becoming uncontrollable teenagers,
and then going off the rails altogether, is cruel (short-term, socialist inspired nonsense).
Also some people seem to think ‘disciplining’ means letting the child run wild, and then when he
does something very bad, giving him a ‘good’ beating. As opposed to the mother spending long
hours with the child, reading to him, having fun with him, teaching him, educating him what is
right and what is wrong, letting him know that there are many things that he can do, and some
that he can’t; giving him choices: letting him see that there are some things open to discussion,
and where he can choose what he would like to do, but that also he should take other
people into consideration; and that there are certain things not are not correct or acceptable
behaviour, and certain things that will result in a reprimand, and certain things (like poking metal
objects into electrical sockets) that will result in undesirable consequences.
Another problem is those parents who won’t let their kids mix with the children of Disbelievers,
for fear of them being corrupted; but then are quite happy to let them mix with their own cousins-
who are wrecked, and live in households where the parents are non-practising, and who learn all
the evil behaviour from the society; and so the children are corrupted via them.
Anyway, rant over, here are just a couple of quotes:
* Imaam adh-Dhahabee -rahimahullaah- mentioned in ‘Siyar A`laamin-Nubalaa.’ (10/233), in
his biography ofaboo Mushir `Abdul-A`laa ibn Mushir ad-Dimashqee:
” Ibn Zanjawayh said: I heard Aboo Mushir say: “Strictness with a child at an early age will bring
about increase in his intellect in later life.”
[ adh-Dhahabee said about Aboo Mushir in his biography in ‘al-Kaashif’:
The Imaam, Aboo Mushir al-Ghassaanee, the Shaikh of Shaam.(He narrated) from Sa`eed ibn
`Abdil-`Azeez, and (Imaam) Maalik; and from him (narrated):Ibn Ma`een, Aboo Haatim, and
`Abdur-Rahmaan ibn ar-Ruwaas. He was from the finest of the scholars, and from the most eloquent and correct in speech, and one of those who memorized most. He was threatened with the sword to force him to say that the Qur.aan was created, but he refused, so he was imprisoned. He died in Rajab, in the year 218 (H).”]
* Ibnul-Jawzee -rahimahullaah- reported in ‘Dhammul-Hawaa’ (p.116) that Ibraaheem ibn
Ishaaq al-Harbee (d.285 H) said:
“Keep your children away from evil companions, before it happens that you have immersed
them in, and dyed them with affliction”,
and he said:
“The beginning of the corruption of children comes about from one another.”

Sufyaan once wrote to one of his Muslim brothers

May Allaah, with His Mercy, protect both me and you from the Hellfire.

I advise both you and myself to fear Allaah.

And I warn you not to turn to ignorance after you have learned, not to turn to destruction after you have seen and recognized the truth, and not to leave the (Straight) Path after it has been made clear to you.

Do not become deceived by worldly people, and do not become unduly impressed by the way they strive for and greedily gather worldly things, for the terror (that will envelop them on the Day of Resurrection) is indeed SEVERE.

The danger (of the Day of Resurrection) is grave indeed, but what is more, is that it is near at hand.

So occupy yourself exclusively with the Hereafter, and empty your heart of all other thoughts; once you have done that, work hard! Do not waste time! And flee from the world and its temptations! Travel to the Hereafter (with your worship) before you are taken there… I have indeed given you the same advice that I gave myself.

And understand that success comes from Allaah (subhaanahu wa ta’aala). The key to gaining His help is supplication, prayer, feeling remorse for past negligence, and complete submission to Him.

Your days and nights are numbered, so use the time you have left wisely, and do not be negligent in fulfilling the rights of your Lord.

I ask Allaah, Who has blessed us to know Him, not to entrust us and you to our ownselves; and I ask Allaah to be our Guardian and Helper, just as He is the Guardian and Helper of His beloved, righteous slaves.

Beware of doing that which will spoil your deeds, and know that it is showing off that spoils a person’s deeds; and if it is not showing off, then it is conceitedness – for you to imagine that you are better than one of your Muslim brothers, when in reality he performs more good deeds than you do; or perhaps he performs his deeds with a purer intention than you do.

And even if you are not conceited, beware of developing a love for praise.

Be ever so careful not to come to love other people’s praise of your good deeds, or the respect they feel for you and bestow upon you because of your good deeds.

And beware of desiring that others should help you in your personal affairs just because they have become impressed with your good deeds.

You surely claim (as does everyone else), after all, that you are doing good deeds only for the sake of Allaah (subhaanahu wa ta’aala); well, then turn that claim into a reality.

If you want to be less desirous of this world – its things, wealth, and pleasures – and more desirous of the Hereafter — Paradise and its bliss – then remember death frequently.

And know that you have long term hopes for this world – which one should not have — if you fear Allaah only a little or if you recklessly perpetrate sins.

And one will be sufficiently regretful and wretched on the Day of Resurrection if he has knowledge but does not apply it.

Advise on raising children

This is an except from the Book of : Imam Ibn Qayyim al-Jawziyyah (d. 751 AH), a famous book called Tuhfat al-Mawdood bi Ahkaam al-Mawlood. One of the most important chapters of his book is the sixteenth chapter, which is entitled Fi fusool naafi’ah fi Tarbiyat al-Atfaal tuhmad ‘awaaqibuha ‘ind al-Kabr (Useful advice on raising children which will have good consequences when the child grows up).

Here is a summary of what Ibn Qayyim said:

1. The child should be breastfed by someone other than his mother, two or three days after birth. That is better because her milk after that time will be thick and contain different ingredients, unlike the milk of one who has been breastfeeding for a while. All the Arabs pay attention to that, and they give their children to desert women to breastfeed, as the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) was given to Banu Sa’d to be breastfed among them.

2. They should not be picked up and carried around until they are three months old or more, because they have only recently emerged from their mother’s wombs and their bodies are still weak.

3. They should be given only milk until their teeth appear, because their stomachs are weak and unable to digest food. When the baby’s teeth appear, his stomach has grown strong and is able to be nourished by food. Food should be introduced gradually.

4. When they approach the age where they will begin to speak and one wants to make it easy for them to speak, a little honey and salt should be placed on the infant’s tongue, because they contain substances that will reduce the excessive moisture that prevents speech. When the child begins to speak, one should prompt him to say Laa ilaaha ill-Allaah Muhammad Rasool Allaah.

5. When the time for the teeth to appear comes, the gums should be rubbed every day with butter and ghee.

6. Parents should not get upset when the child cries and yells, because he benefits greatly from that crying. It exercises his limbs, opens his intestines and chest, keeps his brain warm, warms his moods, provokes his energy, creates suitable conditions for expelling waste matter, and helps rid the brain of mucus and other waste.

7. The child should be protected against everything that may scare him of harsh and terrifying noises, frightening scenes and disturbing movements.

8. Complete breastfeeding lasts for two years. This is the right of the child if he needs it and cannot do without it. The Qur’aan confirmed that by adding the word kaamilayn (meaning complete or whole, in the verse “The mothers shall give suck to their children for two whole years” [al-Baqarah 2:233]). If the one who is breastfeeding the child wants to wean him, she should wean him gradually, and not wean him suddenly in one go; rather she should get him used to it slowly because of the harm that may be done by changing the child’s food and habit in one go.

9. It is mistreatment of children to allow them to eat their fill of food, and to eat and drink a lot. One of the most beneficial ways of training them is to give them less than their fill, so that they may digest well and be in good health, there will be less waste in their bodies and their bodies will be healthy, and they will have less sickness because of having less food waste in their bodies.

10. One thing that the child needs most urgently is close attention to his moral well being. He grows up with whatever the one who is raising him gets him used to when he is small. [If it is] resentment, anger, arguments, haste, being easily led by whims and desires, foolishness, hot-temperedness and greed, then it will be difficult for him to change that when he grows up. Hence you will find that most people are deviant in their character, because of the way they were brought up.

11. The child’s guardian should keep him from taking from others because if he gets used to taking, that will become natural for him, and he will grow up as one who takes and not one who gives. If the guardian wants to give something, he should give it by his hand [i.e., give it to the child to give away] so that that he will taste the sweetness of giving.

12. He should keep him away from lying and treachery more than he would keep him away from lethal poison. Once he lets him get the habit of lying and betrayal, he will have corrupted his happiness in this world and in the Hereafter, and deprived him of all goodness.

13. He should keep him away from laziness, idleness, a life of ease and too much rest, and he should force him to do the opposite. He should not let him rest more than is sufficient to restore his energy so that he can do more work, for laziness and idleness bring bad consequences and lead to regret. Yahya ibn Abi Katheer said: “Knowledge cannot be attained by letting the body rest.”

14. He should get him used to waking up at the end of the night, for that is the time when reward is allocated and prizes are awarded; some will take less and some will take more and some will be deprived. If he gets used to that when he is little, it will be easy for him when he grows up.
